A List of Ballet Companies Around The World In 2023

Here is a list of all the current ballet companies around the world in alphabetical order, along with their location and website address, starting with...

USA

Despite the pandemic having had a significant impact on ballet companies around the world, there are currently over 150 professional ballet companies in the United States with the largest and most well-known being the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the San Francisco Ballet. These companies have helped to popularise ballet throughout the country, bringing the art form to a wider audience and are just a few of the many excellent ballet companies in the US.

Many ballet companies have their own vocational schools or academies where young dancers can receive professional training. Some are affiliated with the company itself, while others are independent. I was lucky enough to have attended a summer school with the School of American Ballet (affiliated with New York City Ballet) back when I was a student, where I met one of my idols, David Howard. As a French/British trained dancer myself, it was such a wonderful experience to learn a more typically "American" approach to ballet and David Howard was one of the kindest, most intelligent teachers I've ever had.

Some ballet companies in the United States have pioneered new forms of ballet that incorporate modern and contemporary dance techniques. For example, the Alonzo King LINES Ballet in San Francisco combines classical ballet with diverse movement styles, while the Complexions Contemporary Ballet blends ballet with hip hop, jazz, and other forms of dance.

Many American ballet companies tour extensively both nationally and internationally. These tours not only bring ballet to a wider audience, but also provide valuable opportunities for dancers to perform in different venues and collaborate with other artists.

While ballet is often associated with elite, high-brow culture, some ballet companies in the United States have made efforts to make the art form more accessible to a wider range of audiences. For example, the Dance Theatre of Harlem was founded in the 1960s as a way to bring ballet to African American communities, and has since expanded to become a globally recognised company with a diverse range of dancers.
